Plant Profile
Large Flowered Beardtongue - (Penstemon grandiflorus) is a clump-forming perennial in the Plantaginaceae family (Plantain). This striking prairie plant’s native range is primarily throughout the central US states. It prefers full sun to partial shade, medium to dry conditions, and poor soil containing rocky material or sand. They perform best in soils that are well drained. When mature it can reach heights of 2'.
Its stunning large, tubular pink to purple flowers bloom for just a few weeks in May or June. In the past Native Americans treated toothaches by chewing the root pulp of this plant and then placing it in the cavity. Large-flowered Beardtongue is loved by bees and hummingbirds and is drought tolerant. Consider planting it in full sun to light shade in small groups in the native/pollinator garden, naturalized areas or borders.
